hi i have got a spare 3 way light switch off a moggy and wanted to wire the wipers up so that the 2nd position is wipers and the 3rd postion is wipers and washers

The push button washers are part of the character of the Minor!

agreed! Keep the washer pump, it is simple and relaible.

mine will not pump at all

Clean the filter at the inlet (watch out for the Legionella - wear full protective clothing with Haz Mat team at the ready ) and clean the nozzles.

it is usual that a washer pump switch is spring loaded.. they can be purchased relatively cheaply.. but unless you need to get the car back on the road this weekend I would suggest that fixing the original pump mechanism is the better idea

legionalla is only a problem when it become atomised you can drink as much of it as you like..

i have an electric pump so i thought it would be easier as i have the 3 way toggle switch of a morris and will replace the original 2 way switch to a 3 way switch so the switch's will all look original

He's going to squirt it through nozzles = atomised.......... It's ok - I know my L 8. I wouldn't exactly advise drinking it - you could aspirate some while drinking .........

Don't forget to chain the ladder to the wall

sorry miss understood I thought you were meaning be careful when blowing out the lines

as for aspirating it while drinking it.. theoretically yes I suppose you could atomise some of the liquid... in reality no.. which is why Legionella is not killing millions of people around the world who drink untreated water.

I am also highly sceptical of the research you are referring to, probably paid for by the screen washer manufacturers. Even the research paper mentions faulty air condition units in US cars / driving through industrial areas.. and the reports finding are based on 75 cases which really does qualify for one of my favourite saying...

back on topic..

i assume it is a light switch

position one is off
position two is side lights only
position three is side lights and main/full

in position 2 and 3 power to the side lights go through the same terminal i.e. the side lights are not wired to two different terminals and is live in both position 2 and 3. you can see this if you look at the wiring diagram..

so if we apply that to your wiper / screen wash issue

you need to wire the wiper motor to the side light terminal
and wire the pump to the main / full beam terminal

as for which is which use a multimeter.. you do have a mutlimeter?
or look at the light switch

Referring to diagram N44 of the BMC workshop manual which is how my wipers /washers are wired, you will observe that the terminals on the back are numbered.
The switch is on the earth side of the wipers/washers.
Therefore the earth (black) or black/green goes to T4
The wipers are on T1
The washers are on T8 Post corrected
If you mount the washer motor on the engine bulkhead with the washer bottle close then you can take the live supply from either the live feed to the wiper motor or the petrol pump terminal.
What are you going to use the spare hole for where the washer pump was? I used mine for the hazard warning light switch

L 8 is the HSE Guidance on Legionella - ignore it at your peril!! My comment was very 'tongue-in-cheek' - only the already sick/frail are likely to be harmed by Legionella - HSE claim that many folk with Legionella symptoms are drivers! Ergo - it must be caused by driving........ Hmmmmmm.
But - it is entirely possible with a classic car -where the water lies in the bottle unused for months on end - in a nice warm environment. Certainly when I inspected mine (full protective gear+BA set worn) there was some 'slime' in the bottle - and some 'fur' on the inlet filter. Both washed thoroughly with v hot water + bleach, and then refilled with boiling water which was squirted through the system until the stream at the nozzles was in excess of 60 C ...... No chances taken

you surprise me roy I would have thought you would have one of the inline heater jobs so that you get hot screen wash all the time for when you go rallying?

i also found it interesting reading the "research paper" on screen wash which makes so many assumptions and has such a small sample size as to be incredible that any one published it.

another way of doing it is in stages and if you still have your light witch wired in you can use that as the reference..

step 1
replace the current 2 position switch with your 3 position switch but just wire in you wipers and check that they work in both position 2 and 3...


step 2
run a wire from the spare terminal on the switch to your washer pump..

mike are you sure of your number? looking at N44
t4 is live
t1 goes to the side lights
t8 goes to the dip switch

so shouldn't it be
t4 black / green
t1 goes to the wipers
t8 goes to the screen wash

Silly me - well spotted. My wiring would have given 2 washer positions and 1 wiper setting. I will ammend my post.
