how does one remove tyres from the rims?

i have tried levers of all shapes and sizes, but i cannot get them under the beading.

dosent matter about the tyres them selves as they are shot and new ones are needed

you need to get a bead breaker and get the walls off the rims .

where does one get a bead breaker? would a screw driver not suffice? (waits for impending telling off)

Didn't I read somewhere that you can break the beads by placing the tyre (not the wheel) in a workmate or similar and using the jaws to compress the rubber off the rim?

A trick for breaking difficult tyre beads without a special machine is to remove the centre of the air valve, then lay it flat on the ground and drive a car over the tyre (not the wheel). Once it's broken in one place you should be able to work around breaking the rest of it with a big mallet. Or find a friendly garage that will take the old tyres off for you on the understanding that you go back to them when you need to have the new tyres fitted and balanced.

You can use a bottle jack under the car to 'break' the bead (using the weight of the car).

Just work around with the tyre levers - moving it down the bead little by little. Squirt in some soapy water as lubricant! It is the most difficult part of changing tyres. Once the beads are broken away - it's easy to pop the old tyre off - and even easier to slide the new on on - wipe the beads of the tyres with Swarfega as lubricant. Always take off/put on over the back edge of the wheel.
