hi guys gals.

what sort of precious info should an idiot such as me be armed with when i go to see the mot man?

such as .. "pre 72 vehicles only require a visual emissions smoke test".
(ref - mmoc forum)
_
"3 wheels minimum have to lock to pass the rolling road test" ..

http://forums.motester.co.uk/forum4/216.html

"If three or more wheels lock on the foot brake, and both wheels on the handbrake then it passes regardless of figures." summary: enter - kerb weight - not required. - passes brake test without having to give efficiency figure. if enough wheels don't lock - tapley/bowmonk meter on a quick road test.
_

any other info to be armed with?

:D

TBH it makes no difference what you say / know / pleed / beg for etc. His decision and his decision alone

Not heard that brake test idea before - I rather doubt it! They will roller it - and must get good balance and efficiencies. It can be done - no point trying to fiddle the brakes through an MOT. They will look up their book/computer and will know what to test. Anything fitted must work - if hazard switch is fitted - must work etc etc etc .

At the end of the day it's not very much use reading the big book of MOTs, each tester has their own pet hates, including classic cars :( .
Are your seat belts frayed or the headlight reflectors not perfect? FAIL, if that's their pet thing.
I've had cars fail on all sorts of things, and a different tester may fail the same car on different things.
Find an older tester who has experience with older cars and you won't go far wrong, he won't pass anything, but he wont be dedicated to getting old cars off the road either.

Discs and/or servos would have the car instantly refered to VOSA for a full test........ Drum brakes 7/8/9 would all be perfectly accepted - especially if a packet of Mars Bars was to be found in the glovebox.........

Maybe, but stick to mars bars they're easier to chew.
