hi all :D .
Please can some nice person out help me . I have just got hold of an lead free head off an metro, the problem is the walter chainels. It has no heater outlet were the minor or mini one is so ill have to make the pipe longer to go at the bottom of the termost houseing (two out lets ).the peroblem is there is no inlet from the water pump not even an blocked hole to retap. also on the termostat housing there is an little conector witch im lead to belive sould go to the carb to worm that up .
What i would like to know is how do i over come the water pump conector and do i need the extra bit to the carb is it any good having it to the carb .
thanks for looking

there are a few heads discussing this issue.

Basically you can do a number of things, but the route i am taking is to do away with the pipe between the head and water pump. Just get a new water pump without the bypass hose, or somehow blank the water pump outlet.

I've chosen to use my old thermostat housing, rather than the metro one. Then to allow some water flow when the thermostat is closed, drill a few holes in the periphary.

The carb connector? that i don't know about, do you mean the vacuum advance pipe? I think that is just secured at the thermostat bolts, but has nothing to do with the function of it.

If the head is off a 1275cc metro your also going to have to check the valves clear the block face when at full lift. Again this has been discussed lots in other threads.

Hope this helps.

Hello MM16,
If you can make a connection to the thermostat housing to supply the heater that's fine, preferably before the thermostat. Don't you have the standard Minor bottom hose which has a 1\2" branch for the heater return?
You also refer to heating the carburettor, you would need a water heated manifold to use it.

moggyminor16,
The alternative to using the heater outlet from the thermostat is to drill the outlet hole at the back of the head. The Metro head should already have the 2 tapped holes to mount the Morris Minor / Mini style heater connection in the correct place.

As Andrew (Winger) mentioned, the 12G940 head can be tricky as the valves can hit the block. Which head do you have? (The casting number should be on the face where the rocker posts mount on). If it is the 12G940, you'll want to look at another thread where th options are discussed (pocketed block / reduced seats+valve thickness)

The bypass hose is important, but as already mentioned, drilling a couple of holes in the thermostat is a work-around.

The water heated manifold reduces the chance of carb-icing. this can occur in cold weather especially on tuned engines, but the one piece manifold is enough for the average Minor owner. (on the 1 piece manifold the heat from the exhaust side warms up the inlet side)

To answer this point, fit a metro water pump.
