Indicators and side lights

I have had this problem for a few weeks, when i put the n/s indicator on, the side light below the indicator flashes, and when i put the sidelights on, the sidelight lights up. I have swapped the power leads i.e. sidelight and indicators and the problem is the same. I have put a new lamp base in and the problem continues.

Any ideas chaps?

There should be a piece of thin steel dividing the lamp lense (ie, separating the indicator from the sidelight to stop light bleed) - have you lost it ??

This will not solve the problem, the problem is that the actual indicator lamp/bulb is doing nothing and the side light bulb is trying toindicate when indicating and works as the side light as normal. I have tried the earths, and its still the same. Could it be the flasher unit?

Take a completely separate bulb (or a meter if you have one). Earth one side. Take the wires in turn from the side and indicator lamp and connect to the other side of your test bulb (or meter). Operate the switches one at a time and confirm that you see what you should see. This will confirm that the wiring is OK, and not shorting somewhere back in the harness.

I doubt the flasher unit is faulty as it is not connected in anyway to the sidelight circuit (normally). I would start checking that the bulb holders are clean and rust free and that there is the correct isolation still fitted and working between the two bulb holders - Remenber, the lamp base is the earth so if the bulb holders are shorting through the base the path of least resistance is through a bulb....

It IS a bad earth - try it with an independent earth lead.

I just had exactly the same problem with mine! As BMC says it's a bad earth, I cleaned up the area where the sidelight bolts onto the wing to bright metal to make a good contact & it was fine again. ( I did protect the bare metal with a blob of copper grease, as it's conductive).

Cheers for that one chaps, i rewired the earth as it looked worse for wear, and covered all the joints and earth terminal in copper grease. Working fine. Thanks now i need to look at the horn
