Dizzy, I'm So Dizzy My Head Is Spinning

Gladys is an April 1962, 948 cc.

Her Distributor needs replacing or repairing as it looks like the plates are buckled, brushes need replacing and the spindle is wobbly.
I've removed the Dizzy, most carefully.

However, I've received so much conflicting advice & opinions from the Moggie Spares shops, as to its replacement

The Dizzy carries these numbers.
4056 L
BN 260 262
The Lucas Vacuum says-5-8-23 54418274
The Vacuum housing carries, DM2 AR

I've been told to purchase a side entry cap 948 cc Dizzy, yet the one I removed has a top entry type cap.
Then I was told that the Dizzy itself could be a 948 cc, but the cap has been changed to top entry, so yes indeed buy a side entry type and just change tho top.

Others say that Gladys was just on the cusp of the change-over from the earlier to the later type and to get a 1098 cc type.

Others say that there is a compatible Dizzy called Ducillier, which is guaranteed to fit, other advice says don't ever fit a compatible, go for a recon Lucas Dizzy.

I then thought a way out of the problem would be to get my existing Dizzy refurbished because at the least I know it fits-the quote I got was 165 plus VAT and carriage-which seems a ridiculous amunt of money.

I'm amazed that my Dizzy can't be positively identified from the numbers I lifted off it, and wonder if any member can ID what type I need to go for.
Also, is there any firm or Moggie place that's good at refurbishing Dizzys at a price better than the 165 plus VAT & carriage.

ESM, always my fave place to shop is out of stock af recon Dizzys and are unsure as to when new stocks will arrive.

Any advice, ID, guidance would be appreciated, as my head has been wel and truly, "done in" with barrage of conflicting data.
best wishes
John

Don't pay anything LIKE that money! There are BRAND NEW dizzies available for very much less than that. This one from Simon BBC is the latest type and will fit directly into your engine. At £29 it's a screaming bargain http://www.simonbbc.com/automotiveshop/ ... tor-morris
By the way - Dizzies don't have 'brushes'! And - don't touch Ducellier dizzies, even with a long stick!

Somewher on the message board was a list of dizzy serial nos and their applications but I doubt if you would notice the difference. You can check the advance nos on the bob weights if you like.

Just to add, I had issues with my Spitfire ignition, changing to the Lucas setup from a 1500 fixed a few but not all so I got the fully electronic 45D setup with coil from Simon BBC for less than £80 delivered. I can't fault it. It's like driving a different car.
Because of this I will be getting the fully electronic 25D setup with coil for the Traveler when I convert it to negative earth.
The only evidence you have anything 'not standard' are the two wires that connect to the Dizzy and not just the one. The mechanism is magnetic and works like a dream.....
Great guy to deal with, very friendly and the parts were here in two days.

There is a thread on The conversion on the go. Looks quiet easy, 10 simple steps. You will need a different set of battery leads as the terminals are different sizes.

For a standard car -I believe the 'electronic' ignition is a waste of money - however that 45D dizzy is a bargain! And - if you wish later - the electronic bits can be easily fitted later. My advice - buy that dizzy for now - and see how well the car goes!
