Ignition Light Glowing

The ignition light on my 1962 Minor 1000 does not illuminate at tick-over, but glows as engine revs increase. The light glows brighter when the headlights are switched on, again going out at tick-over. I have an alternator fitted.
I have just driven 20 miles with wipers and heater on, and the battery still has power to start the engine.
Can anyone tell me what's wrong, please?!!!

Dennis. Thanks, but I haven't touched the coil since I fitted it several years ago.

Hello Chris,
the alternator is probably faulty; and it sounds as though the regulator is not functioning, probably it is now overcharging. If you can do a voltage check with a meter the standard running voltage is about 14.6 volts. If you don't have a meter, sniff around the battery, if it smells distinctly 'acidy' it is overcharging.
Last time I bought an exchange 17ACR alternator it was about £30.00 exchange. Not really worth messing with the old one.
By the way, the coil connections are irrelevant to this fault.

Alec: Many thanks. I'll do as you suggest.
Chris.

30quid for an ACR is damn good, not got close to that round here. Obviously worth checking around. Did however, get my brushes for £3 (thanks Kevin) so dont need the new alternator now.
