Smiths electric gauges are best in my opinion but others prefer the capillary type. For the electric gauge you will need the sender which screws into the thermostat housing. Note, these gauges need 10 volts so they have to be fed from the voltage regulator which is attached to the back of the speedo.

Make sure you use the correct sender rating there are about 4 of them. Personally I'd use no other than SPA guages, very accurate and supplied with the sender unit.

Four different senders?! I have a c n h smiths elec gauge with 179 on a sticker on back. What would be the correct sender? Also for a 1098 1968 would i have the plug to screw sender into under the state housing and are the ones that go in the state housing ok?!

still looking for the right sender for this gauge, will ask the experts ie online shops this week. bmc would my year head have the plug to go straight into the head? or is the stat housing the only option unless i tap a thread?

DO NOT consider 'tapping a thread'. If your engine is 1098 it should have the 202 head - which should have the tapping -closed with a hex headed plug.

Edit: that's silly! What if the stat is stuck shut and block is overheating?!
now need to sort out the right sender. any info would be grateful thanks!
