People havce put all sorts in.... im not sure about american engines... but Costworth, scooby, and rover V8s have all been made to fit, you can also install a 200BHP rover K-series engine relatively easily

You have a lot of decisions to make, what do you call high output, 100bhp, 200bhp, 300bhp? Going to make a big difference. At the moment I think the Diff choice is the least of your worries. Depending on the engine output you might need a whole new drive train. Most of us on here have only twiddled with A series stuff which is not what I would call high output, but maybe someone who has put some significant under their hood can chip in.

As mentioned already, it depends on what power you want.
The least effort is a 1275 A-series engine. With a stock 1275 you can keep the axle and the 3.9 Diff would be useful. If you tune the 1275 then you need to look for higher power running gear.
Fiat 2 litre twin cam is a very common conversion and (if you can get hold of a good engine) all the other parts are available from the Minor specialists. I'm not sure if it was supplied in the states, but if Igeneraly you want to look for a European of Japanese donor vehicle rather than American where the engine is smaller and lighter for the same power, but it has to be something that you can find in wreckers yard (generalising a lot but in Europe we are less keen on big lazy underpowered engines, and prefer light efficient stuff). Toyota conversion may be a reasonable option?
To get the best idea - get hold of a few kit car magazines and look what they use in kit cars. Most Kit cars will be developed to use good powerful running gear that is easy to get hold of.
