Caution when buying an alleged rebuilt engine!!

First of all I would like to thank Russell of RTG Services for helping me get my money back.

I recently brought a 1275 engine to upgrade my morris, It was sold to me as fully rebuilt, It had lots of paper work to back this up and it did look the part. Russell did advise to take him along with him to check it out! but being the big chap I am
I thought I will be ok!

Any way Russell came round last week to fit it for me. And after inspection it became quite obvious it had not been rebuilt, the piston bores were scored badly, and after he had stripped it a bit more it was found to be missing its oil pump!!

I contacted the seller who just laughed and put the phone down.

Russell put the engine back together, picked it up and put it in the back of his van, and said come on mike we are going to get you a refund on this engine!

We arrived where I brought it from, I went up to the door and knocked, the chap came to the door still laughing!
He then suddenly stopped, He was looking behind me, I looked around to see what he was looking at, It was Russell
with the engine on his shoulder!

Russell walks up to the door with the engine still on his shoulder! and says to the chap this engine is no good mate!
30 seconds later I had my money back in my hand!

Very understanding seller!!, but seriously you must be careful when buying rebuilt engines privately!

And if your old like me people may think they can take advantage, unless you have a young helpfull mechanic friend half your age!

Russell happens to be an accomplished power lifter an ex olympic weight lifter as well as a very good morris restorer!
And as he said to me a bare engine does not weigh that much!!

I just hate people who think they can rip you off and get away with it.
There's too much of that attitude these days, good for you for getting the money back.

Russell tells me he comes across a lot of this! and not just engines!

I do owe him a big favour, as he does not drink I will just keep singing his praises.

Nice to hear of a good result for all concerned.
As for the engine on the shoulder for me to do that it would have to be an inflatable one

That must be worth a photo, I guess he does not need an engine hoist.

That's a great story! When I had my Auto. repair shop I had a picture of my 22 year old twins on the service desk. The picture shows the Twins shirtless and obviously weightlifters. Over the sign "bad checks returned by these two". It worked. Although one young lady commented "You can send them over anytime"

Good you had a happy ending, bad you had to deal with a crook.

beware, "Rebuilt" is not "reconditioned". When I worked for Trading Standards there were a number of companies offering recon gearboxes. All they did was take them out, paraffin wash them and spray them green. Worked most of the time too.
Always get a full specification of the scope of the reconditioning, then you have something to nail them with. Still not as satisfying as a big friend though....

Hello all,

I do not understand how anyone or any company can trade successfully without giving good service. It takes time to build a good reputation and none at all to build a bad one?

There are plenty of companies who manage to keep trading regardless of the service they provide!

Agreed, and in the Minor world all the more reason for MMOC members to get organised and demand that the 'working party' set up to look into this is re established, this time with more focus and determination to make a difference, and protect the Minor owners.
