My insurance woes...

about me, am 17 year old male looking to buy and drive a morris minor, but only after I get my full driving license (currently only have a provisional one).

Therefore, have been calling insurance companies to find out what they can offer (on a 1967 Morris Minor 2 door saloon with 1098cc engine fully comp (parents with demand fully comp)) to see if I can really afford it...

Footman Jones £833.10 for 3,000 miles and £500 excess (And all their other standard goodies)
£1223.70 for 6,000 miles and £325 excess (And all their other standard goodies)
£1155.45 for 4,500 miles and £325 excesses (And bla bla bla...)
£1358.10 for unlimited miles and £325 excess (And bla bla bla...)

N.B. The cost is the same for a vehicle valued at between 1 grand and 3 grand and aren't too worried about mods so long as they are told and don't increase performance

Lancaster for car costing £1300 and 5,000 miles would be 1,820.18 (pretty much same goodies as for footman jones)

Peter Best for car costing £1300 and doing 5,000 miles, they offered over £2000

RH insurance Don't work with young drivers

Adrian Flux roughly between £1500 and £2000

Performance Direct Don't work with 17 year olds, even though they have a whole bit on their website for 'young' drivers, but young is over 19 according to them, so i must be a baby driver!

So...what do people think about these quotes (esp, fj's) do they know of any others I can try (the compare sights were all at least £12500 with 5,000 miles with £1300 car) how can i get a cheaper quote from FJ, or do i just have to swallow it? Just some thought would be great and some advice as to how to go forward....

The £833 quote from Fj doesn't look too bad to me. Remember as far as any insurance company are concerned you have no "driving history". Once you've passed your test and gained driving experience the next renewal should be lower. The high excess keeps the premium low.

They offered me £833.10 unlimited miles £500 excess this morning. Then when I called back this afternoon they said that was wrong and it was only 3,000 miles...it's interesting that they gave you unlimited with a £500 excess. Are you male or female...it just might be the old 17 year old boy racer thing again ... :(

Hey just got my renewal through this morning was £102.30 with FJ. That was for my 69 minor & 89 Mini 30 on the same policy with agreed value and unlimited miles. I am 38 though. Was paying £62 on the club scheme when I was 21 with the same car, When I was 18 it was £190 with FJ 3rd party. Stick with it your turn will come!! Enjoy driving your Minor as I still do 20 years on. :)

Update...

Carol Nash Have to be over 25

Sureterm over £2500!!! excess £150 fully comp., 5000 miles but that's on normal insurance. Can only quote with classic car insurance when you've got a full driving license, so I'll try again then.

FJ still seem to be the best bet by far... will try the AA when I've got time!

This is precisely why the Club set up the Young Driver's Scheme. So the younger members could use their cars for learning to drive and immediately after they'd passed their test. As you have found most insurance companies will not touch under 25's let alone those with a provisional licence. :D

Is my FJ quote from under the young driver's scheme?

If you rang up and told them you were a member of the MMOC and quoted your membership number yes! :D

Hey all,

I am looking at buying at Morris Minor which is fitted with a 1275cc engine from a Morris Marina - is this a common conversion, and if so, are there significant increases in insurance costs? Are there are any common problems or issues to look out for with this combination? Is a new gearbox required, does it have to be the Marina gearbox, or will a Minor one work too?
Thanks

With insurance, (I don't know about the technical stuff, sorry, but I suggest you ask your questions with regard to this bit in the mechanical part of the forum) it's worth calling Footman Jones and just ask them, when I called they were happy for engine upgrades due to the age of the cars, because they know that engines do need replacing in some cases after that long, but the upgrade I had was looking at was only up to a 1098cc engine, so I don't know about a 'non-morris minor' engine. So just call FJ and see what they will do, especially if you are an MMOC member as they give good extras and discounts.

Hate to resurrect old threads, but does anyone know if FJ still insure young drivers?

I'm 19 and looking at buying a split-screen minor and don't seem to be able to find anywhere that will insure it if you're under 25 (including FJ according to there website). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Footman James will insure through the club scheme, if you join the mmoc they will give you a quote. I got a quote from Adrian Flux, but that was about twice the price as Footman James

Thank Chesney,
MMOC doesn't seem to be on their list of discount clubs? I'm not a member yet as I don't have one yet, and I'm currently just looking into how viable it is for me to buy it. I'm waiting on a quote from flux as we speak though, and if you say FJ are about half through mmoc it should give me an idea as to wether its viable or not :)
