my transmission

I finally got my 58 traveler on the road, for about 30 minutes. Some quick background on the car...
I purchased it not running and had not run on at least 20 years. I did the brakes and fuel system, tune up new tires.
About 30 minutes into my trip a noise like a box of rocks shaking about from the transmission/clutch area started. I pulled over with the clutch in, seemed OK. I put it in first gear and the noises, very loud came back, the car jerked foreword and stopped. Seems if I step on the clutch the noise stops if I let off the clutch even in neutral it will idle fine but sounds like parts of something flying around the inside of the clutch??? I think the transmission is shot. It is the original smooth case transmission. I have a ribbed case transmission from a 1275 MG will that fit up OK??? Thanks for any help/advice.

when your in neutral with the clutch out, the first motion shaft is enaged and spinning inside the gearbox.
when you engage the clutch it prevents the 1st motion shaft from spinning.
Sounds like the bearings in your gearbox are shot. They are easy enough to replace if you wanted to.
but if the 1275 g/box is ok, it should also just bolt on. but as moggydriver suggested you should replace the clutch release fork.

cheers

Sounds like the old gearbox had no oil inside - did you check before moving the car ? The 1275 box will be fine - although you may have to use the clutch fork from the old box as suggested to get sufficient movement on the clutch. Better also check if there is any oil in this second box......... and in the rear axle !

thanks for the advice, I will let you know how it ends up. Oil level is good in everything and will check the ribbed case when installed.
