Horn Plunger

Can the horn plunger be shortened to allow after market steering wheels to be fitted?
I'm looking at a car with a wheel fitted with a universal boss and the plunger for the horn comes past the face of the wheel so the centre cap cannot be fitted. The plunger needs to be shorter to allow the cap to fit and still operate the horn.
Before I took it all apart I thought I'd see if anyone else had done this before?

Hi PSL,

I fitted a Mountney boss and wheel a few years ago, the boss came with its own horn push. As I recall it I had to take the plunger out and use the existing wiring to connect to the terminals on the horn push, I think the horn push has a bit of metal on it that completes the horn circuit by earthing through the boss when it is depressed (I think, can't remember exactly as it was a while ago)
