i need to change the v5 on my series two, as it now has a 1098 in it rather than the weezy 803. however the engine number plate on the top of the block is missing, and the dvla want a number for the engine to verify the change. is there anothe rone somewhere else on the engine, or shall i try and find a scrapper, and "transfer" the plate (i didn't say that) 8)
thanks

The plate may have been removed when (if) the engine was reconditioned. Some companies actually stamp the block with their unique ID but you would have to remove the head to see it. Your suggestion for a number may be a good one but I couldn't possibly comment

You can just make up your own number - nothing says it must be the original number So say mtm1098 - and type it into the block - or on a bit of brass and fix that to the block ! However - don't be surprised if DVLA now take exception to your engine capacity change - and ask for an 'engineer's report - or evidence from a garage that the engine is what you say it is........ they are getting really funny about this these days!

I had that one when I tried to get my saloon's V5C corrected. The car has always been a 1098 but the paperwork said 998, along with several other manual data entry mistakes like an 'S' instead of a '5'. Luckily a friendly garage owner wrote a letter on headed paper for me confirming that it was fitted with a 1098.

i have been told to try sending the v5 off with the modification stated, and they may send it back. apparently if this is the case, they actually realise you may have fitted the engine yourself, so a receipt for the replacement engine is acceptable. dunno how i'll get on though, as the engine came with the car when i bought it off carlo, and i don't know that a hand written receipt for a secondhand engine is quite what they are looking for.
it is interesting to know that you can make up your own number and apply it- this may be a potential cure to the problem.

The recent "fuss" from the DVLA regarding engine changes came about due to the legislation regarding low tax for small engined vehicles. Apparently, some dishonest people were claiming that they had fitted a 948 A series engine to a Rolls Royce and claiming zero "fee" tax discs etc  So now everyone has to provide evidentary proof of engine swops

Make SURE you get the car taxed up for a year BEFORE you send DVLA your V5. They don't 'send it back' - they KEEP it! And so you can't tax your car while they have it!! At least if taxed up - you have a year to sort out the mess.

yeh, i got my v5 back pretty sharpish when i sent it off (twice!) but i am still waiting for them to sort out the mess they made of my sorn. i sent them a mildly pi*sed off letter telling them to sort it, as they had done it right, then decided to do it wrong. i am still awaiting conformation that they have done this! how can they be so inefficient?
this is what i think of them ┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐
