Gear Stick anti-rattle plunger length

I recently bought a plunger and spring set to cure stick sizzle on my 1960 saloon; the old plunger is about 7mm shorter than the new one and the gearstick is so tight as to be unusable with the new one; I cannot even tighten the bolt fully home and have movement; there is a good 2/3mm of thread to go. With the old plunger it tightens fully as before.
The springs are the same length, as is the recess in the back of the plunger.
Do they come in different lengths for different gearbox types or should I be looking for some problem I am too dim/old to notice?
Thanks
Dave
