Questions from new owner in US

I just picked up a 68 Traveller that had been restored in the 90's but had been recently neglected and left outdoors. The car runs well, the interior is still nice and the body is solid. The brakes have gone soft and since it will live in the mountains I'm thinking of upgrading to disc brakes. There seems to be some controversy on the subject as I read through old threads. I can source spridget brakes here fairly easily but the other options mentioned are not readily available. Given the universe of donor cars here in the US what is the best course. Also the car needs to be refinished- paint and varnish- is it possible to do this with good results without separating the wood frame from the metal body? I'm sure I'll have many more questions and I thank everyone in advance for any help you can lend.
