I have now got my Dads old Iveco 35-10 Turbo daily (1998 R Reg) back from wiltshire so I can sell off all the old stock from his business. It has a brand new battery (95 Ah Diesel battery) but when its first spun over in the morning it wont start (just gives puffs of white smoke from the exhaust) unless I jump it off a start pack or a car.
After that its fine all day even after being left 5 or 6 hours.
The new battery has been tested and is fine. The van was not listed on the battery list at my suppliers as it is too old but this is a similar one to the dead one I removed which was a 90 Ah.
I dont think it anything wrong with the engine wear wise as its only done 82,000 miles.
It has a cold start device but this only operates at 2 degrees C or lower. Its a Direct injection 2.8 turbo engine. Any ideas on this ?
I have thought of it being dodgy starter motor and can get one for £80 reconned but from what I have read on the internet you have to take the engine out to fit it !! Not a job I fancy paying to have done if thats not the cause.
Also just to make my day the speedo and clock went dead yesterday. Pulled all the fuses and tested them in case it was mismarked, all OK, pulled the speedo and have worked out there is no permanent 12 volt feed on the red wire on the white plug (took the speedo out and powered the clock from an external supply to work out the wiring) the switched 12 volts on the yellow plug is fine. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for one of these or know where this feed comes from.
I am doing car boots 3 days a week to sell off all the old stock and am sure the neighbours are going to get fed up of all the actvity every morning at 6am starting the bl**dy thing.
Iveco Turbo Daily anyone know anything about them

I'd take a look at the glow plugs.
You should be able to test the for resistance with a multimeter (open circuit = dead)
Any diesel needs these working even above 2 degrees C.

Re: Iveco Turbo Daily anyone know anything about them
Seems the turbo engine doesn't have them, they are only fitted to the non turbo version

if its a diesel it will have glow plugs.
be sure to turn the ignition on and wait for them to heat up before turning the key the rest of the way to engage starter motor.

Seems to be quite common, a search for Iveco Turbo Daily cold starting brings up quite a lot of results including http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=183367
And a suggestion about the high pressure pump.
Sounds like time to invest in Easy Start shares to me.

NOT ALL DIESELS HAVE GLOW PLUGS!
Go and look at any transit from '86 to 2000 (up to the smiley shape ones) and show me where the glow plugs are... (you wont be able to because there arn't any! Some were fitted with a single flame plug for very cold (-20C) climate use but they were not fitted as standard on any UK spec one). If you want to check up do a check on www.fordtransit.org/forum
Easy start will get you going, but engines can develop a habit for it (Believe it or not it can bend the con rods on a diesel meaning the compression gets lower). A common problem with transit diesels is if the maintainance is skimped on the oil gets thick and then they can be a pain to start (with only 1 battery!)
If it gets bad you could always keep a battery and some descent jump leads in the van so you dont need to involve a car? Very quiet then.

Indeed, go easy with the Easy Start,
It's a bodge to get you going not a long term fix.
I'm betting the same engine has been fitted to several cars, do some research on them cold starting and you have a better chance of getting a definitive answer.

Re: Iveco Turbo Daily anyone know anything about them
Not had masses of experience with the Iveco But have with the Fiat Ducato which more or less uses the same engine.
If you have to crank it for ages in the morning before it starts but fine for the rest of the day I would look at the fuel feed circuit If there are any air leaks the fuel can drain back overnight giving starting problems. I would check/replace the fuel filter & seals first & if it has a fuel priming pump on the filter head these can leak with age (fuel may not be visible from a leak as the feed is not under pressure & fuel is lifted from the tank by the pump)
as for cold start devices some of the fiats didn't have heater plugs but had a fuel injector on the inlet manifold which didn't do anything unless the temp was very low cant remember one ever going wrong anyway

Re: Iveco Turbo Daily anyone know anything about them
Doh! why didn't I think of that?
The same sort of thing was happening to my old Merc, if I left it pointed uphill it was a dog to start, downhill, no problem.
Replaced 3 plastic hoses and its fine.
I think it was the reference to cold that lead me astray.
If some of the pipes are clear plastic you can see when there is diesel and when there are air bubbles.
