I seem to remember someone saying that this can happen when you use a later style fuel sender with an older, golden, speedo/gauge. Or is it the other way round?

Is it a 'hot wire' gauge ? In other words -does the needle creep slowly across the dial when you switch on ? If it's the older 'fast moving' needle - then could be worth swapping over the connections on the back of the gauge.

The speedo question is relvent as the later fuel gauges work through a voltage stabiliser
