On the underside of either side the dash on my traveller there is a taught steel wire that is fixed with a screw. The wire(s) run up the pillars next to the windscreen.

What is/are it/they for? Something to do with the headlining?

Please quell my curiosity before I'm tempted to undo the screws and cause havoc!!

they are indeed the front headlining tensioning wires

You won't cause havoc if you release them but you will get a saggy headliner
