Oil Pressure

Hi All

Sorry if this topic has been covered elsewhere, but I've just fitted an oil pressure gauge to my Morris 1000. The gauge reads 60psi when starting, drops to around 40 when running at normal operating temperature and drops to around 25psi when idling.

The engine has done about 130,000 miles and what I'd like to know is, what are the normal pressure readings, and will the engine be good for a few more miles yet ?

By the way whats the best grade of oil to use in the engine ?

Thanks for replies

Tony

Use 20W 50 oil - and make SURE the pressure plate and spring are present and correct inside the oil filter casing - otherwise the oil filter is doing precisely nothing! Your running pressure is a bit low at 40 psi - but it depends what speed that is ? At 60 mph in top gear - with fully hot engine - what is it then ? However your idling pressure at 25 psi is actually good! Although again - it depends what your idle speed is. With that 40 psi pressure - I wouldn't go entering it for the Monte Carlo Rally - - but as a run-around car - it will go for years! If you have been using thinner oil - it may improve with 20W50 - the ASDA/Morrison stuff is fine -= no need for fancy oil in these engines - but do change it often, say every 3000 miles or so ?

Thanks for the reply the 40psi is usually around 45 to 50mph, I rarely go any faster the narrow roads around the village prevent getting up to 60. So considering the engines age and mileage its not in too bad condition.

Many thanks
Tony
