Grey paintwork

Post by stevensani »

Recentley bought my first Morris Minor 1959 4 Door in Grey. Went to a local Paintshop and could not Match it up. Can anyone help me with what colour Grey this could be and where I may be able to get some paint from the Match up. I am located in Nuneaton in the Midlands so could do with somewhere close.
Thanks Steve

Welcome to the messageboard :D

Could be either clarendon or birch grey. See this thread for pictures: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=32086

How much paint do you need? The Minor spares suppliers sell touch up paint or spray cans.

The paint code for clarendon grey is GR6 and birch grey is GR3

Thats for this Louise. Think it may be helpful. I will send a picture once I have downloaded onto computer and you may have an even better idea. I think from your reply that it is Claredon Grey

What month was your car registered? Clarendon and birch grey were both discontinued in January 1959 so would probably only be applicable to cars that were registered during the first few months of that year. Frilford grey and pearl grey were used between January 59 to July 60 so it could be one of those colours. Probably best to post up a picture though so that a definate decision can be reached :D

HI
It was first registered 2nd Sept 1959 and I have attached some pictures. Let me know if you get them as it is the first time I have sent pictures on this site[frame]Image[/frame]

It is quite difficult to tell the difference between Frilford and clarendon grey, they are very similar. If built in late 1959 the dark grey shade would be frilford.
I may be wrong but I think you could check what the interior pattern is as this changed around the same time as the exterior colour. If the seats have thin stripes (about 1 1/2 " wide) then this is the earlier style and the car was probably clarendon, if they are wider stripes (about 3") and a horizontal stripe across the top and bottom then this is later type for 1959 so the car would probably have been frilford grey. Of course that is if the car has it's original interior

im with you on this one, looks more frilford grey, but getting a paint match on faded paint is very tricky, you could get the colour scanned then mixed. its dearer but you would get the correct shade.

Hello, did you ever establish the name of your grey? I have a 2 door 15th June 1959 car grey and I cant work out its colour, but it looks similar to yours. Chrissie
