I have to replace the eyebolt rubbers as part of the task of replacing all the bushes with poyurethane. However I am not quite clear on one point (this is my first Minor since 1970!)
If I release the front lower wishbone half, the pressed piece, and relieve the tension in the torsion bar bar by lowering the jack under the rear half, disconnecting the king-pin to allow this, can I then remove the screwed pin which is shown in the manual as a forward extension of the torsion bar. If I can will it be possible to remove the eyebolt and refit with new rubbers. This would seem to avoid the extra work involved in disconnecting the torsion bar at the rear.
It's not that I am lazy, I just like conserving my energy!

first loosen the eye bolt nut at the back of the chassis a little then knock back the thick wishbone so that the torsion just clears the eyebolt and drops down, you can then eithet replace the bushes and or eyebolt, now its undone a little

no need to loosen anything at the rear of the torsion bar

Thanks, I'll get on to it tomorrow. The manuals are strangely quiet on this point, also on the question of adjusting the camber angle, mine was about 8' positive, it was like driving on black ice when the road was wet, and the tyres have worn into a cone shape.

As Dennis says - no need to touch the rear of the T bar. Camber angle is adjusted by fitting washers (or I used a steel plate!) between the eyebolt and the chassis leg. Very slight -ve camber is about all you can hope for before the nut comes off the end of the eyebolt retaining thread. Be sure to reset the tracking after any work on the suspension.

The rubbers can be replaced with metalastic bushes, fit and forget, mine were fitted over 25 years ago.
Mark the position of the lower suspension arm on the splines with Tippex or similar before removing.

Can you just remind the source of these metalastic bushes Mike ?

Your local? bearing supplier. The inside diameter needs to slide over the fulcrum pin and the outside diameter needs to fit inside the eye bolt, so take both parts with you. You may have to cut it to the correct length.

Bearing supplier may supply but the original source was a J4 van and the bearing will need shortening

Did it have a similar use - on the J4 van ?

I think it is to go into the rear spring when fitted to a J4 van.
Highly recommended by me too, almost indestructible when used in a Minor eye bolt.

hi all, i was trying to do the same job (replace suspension bushes)....
but can seem to get the eye bolts to budge, they dont look rusted at all, but even after fully releasing the nut and after a few hits with a hammer, still no movement,

in the end i used a shifting spanner on the outside of the eye, was just enough to get the torsion bar lined up again,... this fixed it for one side but i still have to do the other side...

is the eye bolt simply just a normal bolt, or is it slotted or something??
is it just the one nut and nothing else(sounds stupid but for the amount of movement, it looked as though it must have had something else holding it in)??
is it a taper??

PS. the poly bushes are far better than the rubber in my opinion, not too hard as i feared

It's just a simple bolt - be glad it is tight - they are often rattling loose - which can't be good.

If theres any repairs in that area it could have gotten welded by accident.
