Hi all,
was driving my van the other day all was well, then i went from reverse to first with no problems but then as i accelerated in first a loud clunking had developed in the gear box...
the clunking only happens in first and reverse.... all other gears are fine,
what have i done??
thanks in advance
Jake

Broken (or badly chipped) a tooth - probably on the laygear, but possibly on 1st gear. Use 1st and Rev with great care now, and start looking for another box.

well thats no good...
how can i identify what type of gear box i have??
ive been offered one to purchase out of a 1000...
does this mean it is off of a 948 of a 1098?? (probably a silly question, but i want to make sure it will fit)
at current i have a 948 with a remote control that looks like the one detailed in FFF.2 of the BMC service manual..
are there any markings that i can look for that can identify the correct bell housing, as ive heard that they are different sizes and if i get the incorrect one i will have to do modifications...
thanks
JAke

I do believe that it is quite common to fit the 1098, ribbed case gearbox, to either engine, not sure what, if any modifications are required though.

948 box is smooth, 1098 box is ribbed and has a hole near the top of the bellhousing. It's a much better box! Smooth boxes don't fetch much - so don't pay a lot!

a 948 - $??
a 1098 - $??
and what sort of modifications are required to fit a 1098 where a 948 used to be?
thanks

It depends entirely on condition. You don't say where you are ? But the fact you ask a price in dollars....... In the UK - the smooth boxes are pretty much free or almost so, but are likely to be in poor condition, although gems do turn up! Spares for these boxes are very hard to find. The ribbed boxes can only be valued on close inspection. An unseen one could be obtained for perhaps £30 - but could be of course be in very poor condition. A box that stood up to close inspection - with unworn dog-teeth on 2nd gear etc could be worth upwards of £150.[frame]
