Aarrrgghhh! simple oil change

I tried to do a simple oil change this morning, stealing an hour early when I should have been pointing the outside of the house, but I've had real problems with the old style oil filter.
I retrieved the base plate from the old filter and the spring beneath it, but I can't locate a rubber washer to remove from the rim of the housing. I have tried "inserting" one of the three that came with the replacement filter, but they don't seem to stay in place and I ended up trying to balance them on top of the filter casing as I screwed the bolt back in to position.
Needless to say this didn't work and when I start her up I get oil pouring down the sides of the filter casing.
Am going to order a spin off conversion kit next unless anyone has a tip on how to do this easily?
