Morris Minor Owners Club

I saw on this forum that 20W50 is recommended for the morris. I assume this is for summer and winter use.

I'm only driving in the summer with my tourer (the heater is OK, but below 18 C is cold with the hood off). Should i also use the 20W50, or is there a better alternative?

20W50 is the better alternative ;-)

As RAY says use 20-50W in the engine,if you can get it over
there, and it is fine in the gearbox(in later models)too. But
you might be interested to know that I have recently collected
a rebuilt gearbox and the expert who rebuilds them recommended
that the best oil for the Minor gearbox is Castrol GTX 15-40W.
He advised that the 20-50 made the gearchange a little less
'slick' than it should be.

i dont like these cheap 20/50 oils in the gearbox,

But both of those 20/50`s are hard to get hold of, GTX is now 15/40 and their 20/50 is in there classic range and quite expensive (XL 20/50 £16.95 a gallon which was a forerunner to GTX) and I cant remember when I last saw Duckhams 20/50, I tend to use Comma 20/50 as locally to me its available quite freely and is rated higher than 20/50 was in the Minor heydays and as a matter of interest its also sold by Bull Motif.
A quick update if you look at the following site there is some useful info and I was surprised to find that proper castrol 20/50 does not have the range of 15/40 which more than covers the 20/50 range, which may shed more light on Willies gearbox oil type remarks. It would appear that 15/50 or 15/40 are the oil`s to go for, have a look and decide.

I've been using 15W/40 GTX for the last 6 months (Safeways had a special offer & the 20/50 is becoming scarce).
The gearbox is fine, as is the engine - it just seems to drip out a bit faster (lower viscosity = faster leak). I'm not too sure about the gearbox being smoother - maybe it's my driving!

I will try to find the 20W50 first.

I have build in a rebuild gearbox last month and renewed several gaskets of the engine, including the gaskets of the sump. They were hard as stone. Had serious oil leaking before, and will refill the engine and gearbox next week. I think its better to use the thicker oil, because i will only drive it in the summer.

I assume this oil is thinner and probably the expert is right. Oil leaking from the gearbox is not a major problem.

Duckhams 20/50 is available from the Birmingham Minor Centre, which is fine for those of us living a couple of miles from Oldbury but for everyone else...?

I tried 15/40 last summer and she did dribble a bit more than normal, but hey it was cheap and what more can you expect? She is an old girl, after all... She likes her 20/50 though.

You do tend to dribble more as you get older Gareth.
