Loss of engine power

Hello, just collected my first Traveller and driven it home on the motorway. It has the 1275 midget engine fitted with the 5 speed Sierra gearbox. Whilst driving home suffered quite badly from loss of power, with kangarooing and the like :( It did this for quite a few miles. When I pulled over, revved it it seemed to clear and pick up again, on one occasion a lot of smoke could be seen coming from the exhaust. I lowered my speed to 50 mph and limped home thinking dirty petrol / fuel filter problem. This afternoon whilst trying to remove the filter from the fuel pump I saw that one of the connections to the pump did not have a nut/washer on it and was looped loosely on the thread. My question is could this have been responsible for the loss of power and poor running that I experienced or should I be looking at other things. I have not had time nor enough petrol to take the car out again since finding this but would like peoples opinions on the fault thanks foggy156

Probably just an earth lead. Should be there - but not absolutely essential. I rather doubt it's the problem - but worth fixing anyway. You will need to check all the usual things - ignition/condition and colour of plugs etc. Set up the valve gaps correctly and then run a compression test on the engine. Maybe it was just rubbish fuel - try some new stuff!

thanks but not up to posting photos yet, there are 2 nuts on the end of the pump which hold thin electric cables to it, on the right as you look at the pump, from the front of the car. One was just hanging on the threaded bit no nut or washer in place, now put one on. My old feeler gauges are long past it not been used for years so will need to buy some more to check tappet clearances. Can anyone tell me where to buy engine service kits for this engine and what oil it uses etc. All the books I inherited with the car are for the Minor ca or Traveller, could do with a book on the 1275 midget engine any suggestions which and where ? I am putting some petrol in from where I buy mine from this afternoon, so will take it out and see what happens. foggy 156
