Ital flywheel

I'd like to start reconditioning the Ital engine I bought a couple of years ago, and wondered if any of you out there know if it's feasable to adapt the Ital flywheel rather than re-drill the Minor one. The engine came without the flwheel so I can't check this out. I've given serious thought to waiting for a sprite engine to turn up, before ploughing money into this one.

The Ital fly wheel is too big to fit inside the moggy gearbox bell housing.Having an Ital flywheel would help in drilling out a standard morris flywheel to the six bolt patteren. Then you can use the complete morris clutch.

As GAS says - it's too big, but makes an excellent drill jig!

Thanks, I realize the flywheel is too big in diameter, but asked if it could be adapted! In other words reduced in diameter. Following that I would need to know if the resulting surface would be thick enough to accept the ring gear, also there is the clutch plate surface area, is that the same size?

that's a lot of work. What is wrong in drilling a moggy flywheel.

Nothing I suppose, but the Ital has the ability to locate properly. Maybe I'll find one to satisfy myself. I expect I'll end up drilling a minor one.

I'm midway through rebuilding my engine. Its a 1275 Ital with a redrilled 1098 flywheel
in this photo you can see the necessary register in the crank. This one has a spigot bearing in it for the ford type 9 box, If your going to be using the std box they can be got without the bearing[frame]

this one with the flywheel on[frame]

I have used the std 1098 clutch in the past but since have had two extra dowels put in so I can use the stronger cortina/sierra diaphragm clutch all the other bolt spacings & diameters are identical

Thanks for taking the time, makes things clearer. Am i right in thinking the spigot is a separate item, locating in the crank end to centralize the Minor flywheel?

Yes. there are different types depending on what box your using. If using a std box you will need a register without the bearing where as the register on mine has one fitted for the ford box

What size/ engine type of Ford clutch is that from.

Its a 1.6l Cortina/Sierra clutch.
If buying a kit there is a difference between 4 & 5 speed center plate splines but the covers are the same

Again thankyou, hopefully my final question, who supplies the spigots please?

I cant remember where exactly I got mine from, I think it was from one of the usual Minor suppliers. I've also got bits from Frontline spridget before, they would sell them

Great, that was my main concern---centralizing the assembly.

But if you machine down an Ital flywheel, you won't need to. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with that

Would be helpful though to have a definite pointer to the supplier of that centralising 'spigot'.

I tried to source a clutch aligning tool in the UK a few years back without success. I bought this one locally. They do mail order. If you can't source one locally, I could lend it to you if you promise to post it back to me when you are finished. It's only light plastic and weighs ~20 grams (3/4oz) so will be very cheap to post.
