G.S.Jones' spares website shows a rear view mirror fixed through the triangular fillet in front of the quarter light, and this looks a very tidy way of doing things. However, it seems the length of thread available after drilling an inserting the mirror stem would be only 2 or 3 threads. Has anyone fitted mirrors in this way? I would be grateful for anyone's advice or for alternative ways. Thanks a lot. David

Thanks, that's re-assuring. Perhaps it's common knowledge, but I didn't realise till yesterday that the triangular metal piece can be removed to make it easier for drilling. It also prevents any accidental damage if the drill slips. When I eventually get these fitted, my van should be mirror complete and have good rearward vision in traffic. I don't know how the previous owner drove it, because he only had an interior mirror and a small clip-on one on the driver's quarterlight. We fitted some temporary ones on the wing before we even drove home! You'll see from the second picture that it is now fitted with GPO style mirrors which I have painted blue to make them look less in-your-face. The stems on the chrome ones were too short.

Thanks Leo - that's been extremely helpful and it was thoughtful of you to advise me so promptly and to take that picture for me. The wonders of the internet! I have now fitted the door mirrors and have added a large bullseye lens to the near side mirror. Your help has enabled me to complete the task - I was getting very despondent. It didn't seem right to have to distort the triangular piece of metal. It just didn't seem to be an engineering way of doing things and I wouldn't have done that off my own bat. Yes, they are Landrover stems, just as aupickup has pointed out. They work very well, but I felt they needed a coat of dark blue paint to blend them in. I also put a large rubber washer between the large metal washer at the top of the thread where the stem goes through the wing.
