I am rebuilding a 1095 gearbox,but can not remove the circlips on the layshaft gears, to replace the needle bearings. Has anyone got a sugestion without destroying the old bearings? Thanks in advance. Mick

Since you are renewing them anyway - don't worry about destroying the old ones!! Just dig them out. Usually the bearings are fine - it's the lay shaft that wears.......

Hi bmc thanks for that,but it's the clip that's the problem. The only way to remove it appears to be by grinding a slot down the gear into the clip undercut so to get a scriber into it then lift the clip. It's just that I dont like grinding the gear nor does the owner of the box.

I think you use circlip pliers!!!

From memory the clips are angled at the ends and although they dont have circlip eyes - an expanding plier should compress them inwards??

I seem to remember just digging them out with something sharp........ But it was 40 years ago! Certainly didn't get into grinding anything!

They are indeed tapered at the ends and if you use a small screwdriver with a sharp end you can ease it between the end of the circlip and gear enough to start the removal. It is then a matter of chasing it round until it pulls out.
