can aluminium be welded to steel as i have been told that it can so i just want to confirm this is true

Hello Josh,
no it can't, you can only weld metals of the same family together. Some dissimilar metals can be brazed e.g. copper to steel but generally no.

Hello Josh,
just to add to that, a good way of joining aluminium to steel is pop riveting. Done properly it is a sound and serviceable join. By properly I mean the right diameter hole to suit the rivet, all burrs removed and an adequate number which depends on the load. (Just look at aircraft riveting and how many are used on stressed parts)
