It is really difficult to weld pipe And make a gas proof joint as you can't access the whole joint in one hit.
Using Oxy acetylene would have a nicer looking job, but they made a good job with what was at hand.

The correct way to weld a pipe is to purge weld it. Basically, Tack all the joints as reqired then tape one end of the pipe up and pierce a small hole in the centre of the tape. This is to allow the gas to escape. Then fill the pipe from the other end with argon or argoshild gas. Next, slowly tig weld it from the outside, the weld will then penetrate through to the inside. This should give you a good smooth sealed joint inside and out.

Don’t fill the pipe with argon and seal both ends! You have to have a flow of argon gas through the pipe.

I've seen worse welding....

Try welding up a really rusty sump ( e.g on a Nissan where the sump is rusty because the engine never leaked a drip of oil...)
Welding to rust where the pits go right through is a bit of a pain, therefore prone to pinholes
Then refill with oil and when it gets hot you see a pinhole leak at the bottom :(
Trying to weld up a sump whilst full of oil is one way to get awful looking welds!

That's why rolling the car on its side is a major leap forwards for health and safety.

THOUGHT MY OVERAULS WERE ON FIRE BUT IT WAS MY ARM ,TERIBBLE SMELL
The smell of my arm burning usually reminds me of bacon...

As for welding spatter in the ear - this is no laughing matter and if you're unlucky you'll have a pemanently damaged eardrum! I've managed to headbutt the underside of a car once because of this (nearly knocked myself out in the process) and now make sure my ears are protected when welding under a car.
Also I make sure my laces are undone in case of needed a quick removal!

Using a car roller is really a blessing after 20 years of risking nasty injuries doing it the hard way, but just as importantly it helps to get a good quality repair as you can see better, aim better, prep better allows more patience, and you don't have to work 100% against gravity.
