Hi,all of my MMOC.,friends.Does LRP petrol still exist ??.Ive not needed to take much notice of this subject for eons,but after recently aquiring my Mogg,named Nuffield, Ox-Minor,the subject has cropped up.I live in Coventry.Does it still exist ??.

Please excuse my (Canadian) ignorance, but what does LRP stand for? From the other posts I assume it has something to do w/leaded fuel?

LRP was Lead Replacement Petrol sold in the UK when leaded 4-Star was withdrawn from general sale in 2000.

theres a garage in dunstable that still sells it on the a5.

Yes some still do sell real 4 star but it is way overpriced. Not worth it.

Too right! There's a garage near me that still sells real leaded 4-star petrol - at £2.49 a litre! I nearly choked when I asked the price.

LRP is NOT leaded petrol! You can 'make' leaded petrol by adding Tetraboost to unleaded fuel - this is the ONLY way to make 'leaded' petrol - it's the ONLY additive that actaully contains Tetra Ethyl Lead

Thats what I said. LRP was lead replacement petrol, sold when the real stuff was taken off general sale.

Depending on your mileage, driving style, and luck you may or may not be fine with Unleaded petrol.

If you do *lots* of miles on the motorway then it's (IMHO) worth investing in one of the FBVHC approved lead replacement substances (e.g. Castrol Valvemaster), if you do *lots and lots* of miles it may be worth getting an unleaded head fitted (but that's only if you're doing a fairly huge mileage).

If you're mainly pootling around at weekend, you will *probably* get away with unleaded fuel, unless you're unlucky and you start to get valve seat recession, at which point you'll need to fit a new head...

Or hardened valve seats.

I have found using Castrol valvemaster is an adequate replacement,certainly cheaper than changing the head if you do only a few thousand miles per year , I think it is better to use an addtitive rather than just plain unleaded

Just a word of warning........ you can but actual real 4 star from the garage on the Fosse Way near Leamington ........... it was over £4 (FOUR!!!!!!!) a litre 2 years ago.

At that price they can keep it! It must be going stale in the tank.

The accepted answer it "it depends". Some folks have been running without an additive with no problems, others have experienced valve seat recession. If you just potter about and don't do many miles a year then it'll probably go on for years before you notice the valve clearances closing up. If you do a lot of motorway driving then an additive (approved by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, I'm not sure if the Halfords one is) would be a good idea unless you're planning on changing the cylinder head soon anyway.
