How serious is this?

Hello,

I have a rust patch that goes right through the wheel arch of my traveller.
It looks too close for comfort to the springs and I am wondering if anyone is able to tell from photos if this is likely to be a major issue. I am hoping to take it to a Branch meet on Tuesday to get 'onsite' opinions but any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

if it has gone through it will need a patch and will only take a good welder about 20 minutes

That is definitely an MOT failure. But it is a usual Minor repair. Don't patch it! The rust is right over the spring hanger,

Luckily, it doesn't look as if it has been patched in that area. The long term cure is a new rear spring hanger/ rear chassis leg and a section of inner wing that closes the chassis section. The parts are about £30, http://www.morrisminorspares.net/shop_item.php?ID=2818. The axle has to be dropped to carry out the repair.

Whilst it is being repaired have a poke around and see what else you can find which may save you an MOT failure.

As chickenjohn says dont patch it fit the recommended rear spring hanger. It will take considerably longer than 20 minutes and bear in mind the close proximity of the fuel tank. Personally I would remove the tank before welding

I'd suggest taking out the foam that is plugging the end of the chassis legs there and let some air in so it has a chance of drying out and less chance of rotting any more.

Yes indeed - and better inspect the other side closely too, may as well get that done at the same time. I would indeed remove the fuel tank - it's too close for comfort.

Many thanks for the advice, gents.
As suggested I checked the other side and as expected it is starting to go.
I will scrape out the foam from the leg ends and clear away the really bad rust to hopefully stop the spread but as I have never even used a soldering iron let alone welding equipment, I will be looking for outside help for the main work.
At least now I know what I am asking for.
Thanks again.

I'm sure someone from your local branch will be able to put you in touch with a "Morris friendly welder". I would lift all carpets and have a good look around so you don't have to pay him another visit!
