i would say from the front, and then work backwards
you need the rear window out to do the rear part around the rear window

I think you need to start at the back. It has to fit around the window then work forwards.
I had two tries at fitting mine - the only adjustment you can make is where you fit the front board. What ever you do don't make it too short. You can always remove it and refit the front board a bit further back, but you can't go the other way.
Actually I'm not sure which way to work. Jonathon JLH is your man he's fitted more headlining than I've had hot dinners.
I'll send you a PM with a supplier of nylon coated stainless wire - much better than the original wires.

good thinking roger, but the headlining can be cut around the rear window aperture
its easier to fit the headlining to the front section and push it down in place, then work to the back window
have done it this way and it worked well, no creases and all nicely taught

does not say anything really roger
its easier to fit the hardboard strip to the headlining first out side of the car, then take the whole lot inside

This thread by GeorgeHurst contains an excellent step by step guide to headlining removal & replacement:

I'm sure that one of these days I'll get round to fitting the new headlining that has been sitting in my garage for years (that's if the mice haven't chewed it!)

Hi Josh, Defintitely fit from the front in my opinion... though it is crucial to measure the distance from the first seam of the headlining to the front of the wooden board that secures the front of the headlining, and then ensure you make the distance the same on your new headlining. If you get this distance right you shouldn't get any sagging and it should fit well.
There's another interesting thread somewhere on here showing how to make a tool to remove the front headlinging clips - without knowing what you are doing it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, in the dark.

ah, hadn't seen that one Lou. There was another I was thinking of though that included some diagrams as to how the clips sit within the headlining rails, I'm sure it will come up with a search for 'headlining tool' Josh.
I only found the thread after doing my headlining - could have saved hours of fiddling!!!
