Set the valve gaps to 12 thou inlets and 15 thou exhausts - just the same as any A series really. Set the timing 'by eye' until you get it started - then swing it back and forth to get the best idle - followed by road test to check no 'pinking' Once you have it running properly - you should then advance the timing until you get some pinking (when accelerating up a hill in top gear) - and then back it off again until the pinking 'just' stops. It's then set perfectly for your engine - or at least, as perfectly as it can be with a standard dizzy!

You'll never do right now you've fitted the demon disc brakes to it!

I would definitely second an electronic ignition on the 1275, the points I got were repeatedly of atrocious quality, the heel would just disappear off them and after 500 miles I'd be setting and resetting the points just to keep any gap at all....

The Haynes manual recommends 12 thou for both inlet and exhaust.

15 thou on the exhausts allows for a small amount of seat recession "just in case". The original settings were for leaded petrol remember

Can you explain why leaded or unleaded makes a difference to the valve clearances. I thought the valve guides were the problem with unleaded and why should the 15 thou only apply to the exhaust valves, thanks Terry

Unleaded fuel tends to burn hotter than leaded did so the larger gap is to compensate for greater expansion of the hotter valve . Only a suitable additive or hardened seats will stop recession long term
