I bought a grease gun from a local motor factors, but it's terrible.

If you have one that works well then can you let me know what sort it is ?? I'm feeling guilty that I haven't been attending to this regular bit of maintenance

I have tried various modern ones but still prefer the original Tecalemit type supplied originally.

I use a Wanner one, a Swiss make I think, and probably not now available new. Really excellent quality. Like the original poster I previously had a 'modern' one which was complete rubbish.

My father still has a Wanner gun he bought for his Minor in the 60s, still use it for his MGBGTV8, so I bought an identical one on Ebay for use on my MGs & Riley 1.5. They come up quite regularly on Ebay and at Autojumbles, I think mine cost £7.

There are two models of Wanner grease gun often found: one has a barrel around 1 1/2 inches diameter, the other around 3 1/2 - 4". Don't buy the larger one! They're slightly easier to get grease into, once you've managed to pull back the incredibly strong plunger spring, but they're so prone to getting air bubbles in the grease that you spend as much time releasing the bleed valve and pumping away to get the air out as you do greasing.

The smaller of these two Wanners is a lovely tool - mine's been in regular use for something like 45 years.

the best place to go is an agricultural suppliers i have a jcb one and you can get pre filled grease cartridges that go inside no messing about with grease buckets etc

Does it have to have a particular size 'nozzle' on the end?

I agree - Agri place is best supplier - and cartridges make life so much easier. They usually come with a small selection of end fittings. Try a cartridge in your modern gun - it's probably ok!
