Squeaky wheel

Hello! Can anyone help me with this?

There's a noise coming from one of the wheels (at the front on the passenger side) on my car. In fact, it's a combination of two noises: a kind of high-pitched whistling noise and also a deeper, rubbing noise. The noises aren't present when I first set off, but they develop over the course of a journey. The noises go away if I steer to the left. When I park up, the wheel is warm, but not so hot that I can't touch it.

Anybody any ideas?

Have you checked anything out so far, for example jacked that corner up and checked if there is a loose bearing binding brakes or worn suspension rubbers that sort of thing.

The question is, how does it feel compared to the other side?
If it's warmer then probably the brake is dragging for some reason.
Is the car standard?

Sounds like brake dragging AND a problem with the bearing! Best have the wheel off and inspect fairly urgently.

Thanks, all. Yes, the wheel's warmer than the one on the other side. All I've done so far is clean the brakes and grease them a little. That seemed to work for a day or two, but no longer than that.

The garage I bought the car from gave me a guarantee, so I reckon I'll get them to sort it out. At least I've got some ideas to take with me now! The only drawback is that the garage is forty miles away. It'll be safe to drive there, won't it? I mean, my wheel won't fall off on the way, will it?

Certainly take it back! I suggest you jack up that wheel and give it a 'shake' first - just to make sure there isn't a stupid amount of play in the bearing. May be an idea to pop the little cap off the hub - and check the bearing securing nut isn't loose/hanging off - and that it is secured with a split pin, before you set off on that 40 mile journey.
