There is a knocking noise coming from our Minors rear , passibly the damper , could this be due to lack of oil ? :(

Could be - or worn bushes in the spring mounts - or the damper link arm.

or the exhaust banging on the damper arm (will happen if the over axle pipe is not twisted round enough to clear)....

I had a look under the car , it isnt the exhaust , I then tried bumping the car up and down pushing on the back bumper , this caused the knocking again , coming from the drivers side.

Wheel off - inspect all bushes - also check for cracked/broken spring leaves.

I took off the wheel this afternoon, I found what was causing the knock the lever arm coming out of the damper then joins another arm attached to the body , the round joint between these two arms only clears the body by a good inch and when I push the back of the car the joint knocks against the body. In my manual it shows the 2nd arm going up to the body in a verticle direction , on ours the arm is little more than horizontal , if that makes sense.

Sounds like something has broken inside that damper - remove and inspect !

New dampers fitted today, it turned out that the old ones had been fitted wrongly by the previous owner causing them to be too close to the body, but on inspection needed replaced as well , car now sitting higher as well as firmer . Many thanks to David Mc Cullough and Bertie for their help today . :D :D :D

Can't see how they could be fitted 'too close to the body' ? And dampers have no effect whatsoever on the ride height! But well done the willing helpers - that's the spirit!

The shock mounting plates had been mixed up and put on the wrong sides making the shock arms too close to the body, the links were sitting horizontal with the floor!!!!

Good grief - and likely the dampers would be working wrong-way then ? Well spotted!!!!!!!
