changing speedo please could some one help me

Hello to morris minor lovers, I need your help to find a solution to this problem I have. I am a proud owner of a 1965 morris minor convert able, and since about a year slowly I am trying to restore this baby to its best. Well I was very surprised when I found out that the speedo in this morris was a Bronze colored Speedo, and so after a brief research discovered that I needed to install a black face speedo, also because at the back of the dash i found one wire light bulb that was just hanging there. Only later i found out that the bronze face speedo has only three plugs for the lights whereas the black face speed has four.
However back to my problem, after removing the bronze speedo I was surprised to discover that the wiring at the rear of the two Speedos is completely different, and so I don’t know how to wire the other speedo.
I am also putting through two pictures of the old speedo and one of the new black face speedo hoping that someone can illuminate me on how to wire the black face speedo. Thanks to all of you for all your help.[frame][/frame][frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

Looks same to me - just plug the two wires on the double connector on the old speedo - onto the double on the new. And the single wire onto the return on the gauge. However - this will now give you a 'slow' fuel gauge through the voltage regulator - where the old speedo has the 'fast' gauge. It may not work if the tank sender is not compatible. Are you sure your car really is 1965 ?? Sort out the warning lights - and the illumination lights and plug them in. Is the new speedo same tpm as the old one ? Do you have any pics of the car - so we can judge it's age ?

Thanks for the help, well lets take one thing at a time, well the photo of the car is already there its the cream colour one, and well regarding the other questions there are al together four wires of which one is double. and you also ask if the new speedo is the bsame tpm, to be honest I dont know, how do I find out.

Ahh - yes -it has the side park wipers - so does look like 65 ok. Just don't understand why it has the early speedo - and 'fast' fuel gauge. Swap the two lots of wires on the 'double' connector, onto the double on the new speedo volt reg - and the other wire - put it on the empty connector on the gauge. TPM = turns per mile - and is shown on each speedo as a small 4 figure number somewhere on the dial - on the black speedo it's next to the miles reading. Your car should have 1098 engine - with 4.22 final drive, and so needs a 1408 tpm speedo.

well thanks and yes the speedo is 1408, at least this is correct. I think that somewhere during its past someone placed this kind of speedo for some reason or another, oh and by the way as said before there are four wires to wire up of which one is double. If its not too much of a problem could you make a small diagram, I aslo have noticed that one of the wire is green and black

There is a good wiring diagram for the whole car at the top of this forum page.

As regards the green/black wire, that wire is basically your earth wire which leads to earth via your fuel tank sendor. If you lift the rear floor in the boot the wire on top of the tank should be the same colours.

Anyway back to where is goes, I believe the double connectors (in your photos) should go to the voltage regulator at the top of the new speedo and the single green/black goes on the output side of your fuel gauge, (the terminal on the fuel gauge with nothing connected to it at the moment)

The wiring is as follows
2 panel lights - red/white top holes above brackets
Main beam - blue/white bottom left (looking at front of speedo)
Ignition light - brown/yellow? bottom right
Oil pressure light - green/brown right
Oil filter light if fitted - green/yellow left
Green wires - voltage stabiliser B terminal
Light green - v/s I terminal to fuel gauge
Green/black - fuel gauge to tank

well thanks to all of you for all your help, but another small problem has come by, well I just found that the petrol level indicator inthe rear petrol tank is already fitted with a v/s. So i decided to by pass the one fitted on the speedo and thus conected the double green wire on one of the links of the petro gauge and the green and black wire (that comes directly fron the petrol tank) on the other, and it worked, the gauge indicates the quantitly within the tank. And so you could ask, and now where is the problem, well now I am left with this green wire that I am not sure any more where to instal, could someone illuminate me with the correct suggestion. Off course there is always the solution that I could change the rear petrol level indicator to one that does not include the s/v and therefore could someone just post me also a photo of the rear section of their speedo alredy wired, thanks.

Green wire is just a power feed - so just tape it up securely out of the way.

well all working, wired ALL THE GREEN wires toghether, also because not all green wires bring + at times they need also to get the charge from somewhere, so maybe the speedo is also justed as a point to connect wires. However is worked so it is possible to by pass the vs on the speedo and use the one on the fuel tank, Thanks to all of you

Never ever heard of a voltage stabiliser on the fuel tank itself. Someone has been messing with the wiring.

well there are two versions of fuel level indicaters and speedos. In one case the speedo has no vs because its fitted on the fuel indicator on the fuel tank and in the second the vs is fitted directly on the speedo and therefore the fuel indicator on the tank is not fitted with a vs, so as you see its perfectly normal, thanks

Aye - there are two types of fuel gauges ok - but the early ones had no voltage stabiliser, the gauge just swung sharply as the fuel sloshed around - there was no voltage stabilisation involved! The later 'improved' gauge is a hot wire unit and therefore requires voltage stabilised to give an accurate reading, and of course it doesn't swing with the fuel, but does take a few seconds to come up to the correct reading when you switch on.
