New Owner and SORN

Hi All,
I have a possible candidate for my new project.
The guy has the V5 and ''thinks'' he has SORN'ed it but can't remember.
I have asked him to see if he can find the paperwork
BUT Am I right in thinking that if you buy a car that has not been SORN'ed (or taxed) you are liable for a fine from DVLA?
Does anyone know the current situation re. new owners and SORN.
Thanks for the help.
Martin

I am no expert but look at this site and before buying you could maybe ring them for more advice. I would have thought the seller would have remembered putting it on SORN as there is a procedure to follow and you get reminders each year. If you are the registered keeper then you are liable for the fine if you don't SORN it so if you buy the car apply for the SORN right away. IF DVLA have an issue it should only be with the previous owner so make sure you get the V5 (check names & addresses, VIN etc) and probaly a receipt showing that they have sold the vehicle to you. On this site there is also a vehicle checker so if you know the registration number type it in and I think it tells you the last time it was MOT'd. If any of this is wrong then I will give my apologies now.

SORN expires at change of ownership automatically so if you are the new owner and the vehicle is not going to be taxed you need to declare (or redeclare) SORN status anyway. I had this with a scrapper I bought and this was direct advice from DVLA. The DVLA website vehicle check will tell you if SORN is currently valid on the vehicle if you are worried about it.

So - just apply for your details to be added to the V5c - and apply for SORN at the same time !

As above you can check whether a vehicle is currently on sorn at this page
http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/
You can declare sorn on the same page - all you need is the details on the V5c

Download and print off this... and send it off with the V5c change of ownership bit.

Or just pop into your local post office and ask for a V890.
