Tyre size

I've been told to get hold of some 145/14 tyres for SHY....... isn't there something missing from this? What profile should I get or are they a standard thing ? I'm used to tyres like 225/50/17, 235/70/16 etc......

Thanks.

Usually if you just specify a diameter and width then they give you the standard size which works out to be about 80 or 82 profile.

So if you just say 14" 145 you will probably get a 145/80/14 or 145/82/14.

Actually it might be cheaper to get some Firestones or equivalent from a Moggy supplier (like Bull Motif etc.) then get them fitted by your local supplier.

It does no harm to ask locally as one of my local places will do either the 155 x14`s or the 165 x 14`s Firestones for £32:00 on the car they did not have a price for the 145`s though, but most places want £40 - £45 each.

The prices at Bull Motis have come down in the last year - they are now £18.75 for the 145's..
(plus vat etc..)

With the offers available at the moment that is quite expensive!

Bull Motif were the cheapest I saw but take £18.75, add the vat (yes Bull Motif always add vat!) then delivery.
Then you have valve, fit & balance (approx £10 - £15) & you've saved yourslef about a fiver for all the running around and hassle!

Ah well - with a bit of negotiation, you can get fit and balance for a fiver each - saving £20 on a set of 4, but yes it's more running around...

The way I did it was to buy the tyres at a Minor meeting(£22)
no delivery and £20 for fitting/ balancing of all four. Still,
when you consider how long they will last on a Minor they are
all very good value.

That's the way I did it - I picked up the tyres from BM (I was in the area) and had 'em fitted for £5 a corner. Didn't seem too shoddy. ;)

some of my tyres have lasted 7000ish miles...... :s i have an uneven wear pattern due to a slanted front wheel! (yes it is solid - someone either me or my brother clipped a curb and manged to push the connecter between the hub and the chassis part way through the chassis. Its been welded, and i might get round to fixing it over the summer!)

Clipped a curb????? At what speed did you clip a curb and bend bits of the chassis / suspension ??????

None of the suspension is bent.........it pushed through part of the chassis rails at the front, i think it was pretty weak there anyway, and i have no idea how hard/fast i'm fairly sure i would have noticed..........

Ouch, I assume you mean the front of the tie bar or was it the eyebolt fixing as that often suffers from corrosion and splits in that area what was replaced a half chassis leg ?

By the sounds of it - it was left in a wonky state hence the tyre life of only 7k!!! :o
Front eyebolt coming throught the chassis leg whilst at Uni.. Oh those were the days..
I noticed instantly on mine as the steering wheel had to be offcentre to go straight and that kind of thing happens for a reason. I used a front Shock mount support p[late off a Mk2 Golf - I'ts a perfect temporary repair and even has the correct size hole in the middle to fit the eybolt . I fitted a new half leg on mine before the MOT.

yeah its still wonky, the steering is straight, the bottom of the wheel goes towards the middle of the car. I have no problems driving it how it is, it just has a short tyre life.... i'm not sure which bit the eyebolt is so i can't say yay or nay......
