Hi Chaps,
any recomendations on what cam to use on my 1098 (LCB/HS4/12G295) engine? I just got the 12G295 and am feeling very smug :o)

thanks in advance!

That's what the ladies call me.......... either that or "hey you in the bushes"........... No, sorry could not resist!!

Seriously though, the cam selection should be based on what you want out of the vehicle. If you want a race machine that is a right pig to drive and does not tick over properly then go for a 286. If you want a nice boost of power then go for something like a 266 or possibly a 276 (bit lumpy in a 1098 though).

If I were you then get hold of a copy of David Vizard's "Tuning BLs A-Series engine" and have a good read.

I had a 266 in my 1293 engine and I have a 276 in my 1380. The 276 is a bit lumpy but fine generally and copes with traffic OK. but bear in mind that in a smaller cc engine the cam becomes more 'cammy' if you know what I mean. In other words a 276/286 in a 1380 might be equivalent to a 256/266 in a 1098. So putting a 286 in a 1098 is a bit silly unless you are racetrack bound!

I would stick with what you have and make changes to the inlet and exhaust system first. You may find it's just right anyway. Changing the camshaft can also lead to changing the distributor (or parts of) to create an acceptable advance curve across the rev range. This can lead to twice the cost you first thought of.

That goes for anything - I usually work on a "think of a price, and double it" system...

Quite like the Tour de France and watching Superbikes on telly, but as for having an engine between my legs no... not since I passed my driving test in the 60`s and yes you did have to take your test that long ago :)

nice smart comment but most of us own cars from the 50 & 60's!

In which case, the commands are generally along the lines of: "pleeeaaaaasseeee...." or "steady, old girl"... make of that what you will, Kevin...

None Salty I keep clear of the great big things.
My youngest might have one but it still picks on me by treading on my foot so I cant escape or leaning on me.
But as a youngster the only person who could afford one where I grew up was the Rag and Bone man.
To add to Gareths comment I dont see you and horses having an affiliation either they go faster than you drive Phyllis

thanks for all the advice er. Cam ! Is the minor oil pump pin or slot drive? I presume I can keep the old oil pump.

The intake and exhaust are pretty much sorted (lbc manifold and HS4 carb as I said) so the next thing is the cam shaft

I'm thinking a 266 as I'm after a fun car - which is drivable.

"pleeeaaaaasseeee...."
For a Moggy fuel pump
"steady, old girl"...
For the brakes

The standard 1098 Minor engine oil pump has (well should have unless someone has changed it!) a slot in the oil pump drive which locates into the end of the cam. But watch out as some suppliers refer to slot drive as the cam slot and some refer to it as the pump slot (same for pin drives too)!

Two other types available are the pin drive (opposite way round to the Minor setup) and the spider (or star) drive usually fitted to the 1275 engines I think.

Most cams should be available in all pump configurations, but if not then just change the pump! I used a minisport CA2 cam once (256-266 duration) and it was OK so your choice of a 266 for the 1098 should be fine but the tickover might be a little lumpy!
