REAR AXLE NUMBER

Hello all, am I right in thinking that the rear axle serial number should be stamped into the nearside halfshaft casing at the front of the axle? I just want to be sure because I have two spare axles and want to keep the last one that was running on car before broke up. My two spare axles and the one on the car are surface corroded so before start going mad with the wire brush I would just like to know where exactley to be looking for the serial numbers. thanks

The axle ratio on a Series MM and early S11is stamped on the front of the left axle tube near the diff.
The Series MM is normally stamped 9/41 = 4.55:1 and Series 11is stamped 8/43 = 5.375:1
The Morris 1000 diff is stamped on the diff. casing and on the diff. crown wheel

Thanks but its more the individual axle serial number I am looking at, every axle had its own serial number from the factory.

The serial number is stamped onto the diff casing. The actual "axle" did not have an individual serial number.

The parts book says: "The rear Axle Number is stamped on the front of the left hand axle tube adjacent to the spring seat"

The parts book dosent say: - This is usually either missing, completely rusted off or illegible!!!

Thanks taupe, will have a look but like you say years of road dirt and that may have made them un readable. Each axle should defo have its own individual serial number, it is quoted against the factory build records which are held at the heritage motor centre.

Does it really matter ? It's a bit too 'anorak-ish' for me !

BMC

Its a matter of personal choice really. Where possible I like to keep salvageable original parts with the vehicle.

I understand your viewpoint. This is simelar to prefering a car with its original registration - dosent affect the working of the car in any way but is part of its heritage and can affect its value for some people.

Just dont want to get rid of the origional one off the car by accident, personal choice. If it doesnt matter why comment?

I asked 'if it mattered? '! It's definitely too anorak-ish for me now! There 's a lot more to worry about in this life than rear axle numbers.

the only time to worry is when there is no life to worry about :D :D
