Something odd in the sky.

Did anyone see anything odd in the south eastern sky (UK) at about 18.10 on 14 February?
I saw something that looked like it was on fire (Orange colour and flickering). It looked like a bright star apart from the colour. It seemed to move slightly but I could have been mistaken. I went outside but could hear nothing. It then seemed to fade away until it disappeared (At this point it was not moving). I think it was a long way out, so I don't think it was something local. I'm no expert on astronomy but I wonder whether it was a star expiring/exploding. I am aware that some of the light from the stars we see has been travelling for a long time, so this event could have been something that happened a very long time ago.
Any astronomers on here?

I live in Scotland. So no I've never seen anything bright orange in the sky. Apart from once when an EasyJet plane flew over.

Yes - these lanterns are on sale at 99p each - likely one of them! What happens if it comes down on a petrol station remains to be seen.......

It appeared to be about the size of a large bright star. I would say that it lasted only about 1 - 2 minutes.

so long as one of those lantern thingys dosent come down on my little petrol station, they look quite pretty.
they released a load up at the estate when joules holland was playing. appartently they got to about kingslyn then fell out the sky.
as for the orange glow, doubt it was a star or planet, things that bright usually turn up just after sunset.
could it of been a whirlybird? or maybe a plane?

Hi everyone. I think I have a confession to make. Around 6pm last night I took my wife up to the top of Cwmbran and set of 4 Chinese lanters as part of a Valentines day supprise for her. I had lit 2 red, one orange and a white one. although there was very little wind blowing they floated in a southish direction. They say on the instructions that they only last 20 minutes but seemed tojust hang in the sky for ages. If these lanterns are what you saw in the Sth. Wales area last night then I can only say sorry. ( but it was the Chinese New Year ) too and it could have been them aswell.
Mrs "Santa" was well chuffed buy this gesture.
