Heads again I'm afraid

Following on from the recent correspondance regarding unleadeded cylinder heads....
Would a Montego 1.3 12HE head fit onto a morris 1100 block taking into account the cooling water alterations as previously mentioned.
Would the head have to be skimmed.
Is it the same situation with the possibility of the valve hitting the block.
How do you recognise a 1 1/2" HS4 or HIF38 carb.
Is the cartridge type oil filter as fitted to the Mini compatible with the Minor engine.
TIA

The 12HE head was fitted to the Metro also, so i'd assume this was a 12G940.
There may be the valve clearance problem, so it should not be skimmed at all.
The carb can be identified by measuring the throat opening. The HS4 has a float chamber on the side, whereas the HIF38 has the float chamber directly underneath the piston chamber.
The mini oil filter should fit onto the Minor block. You will need the filter housing as well as the oil canister, and the gaskets are different.

Thanks Winger300,
I am intending to retain the 1100 camshaft...Would there be any benefit in fitting the 1275 camshaft. It is still in the engine so I have not compared the cam profile.
Does anyone know if an E reg metro would be fitted with an unleaded head. Eng Number 12HD.
What car is fitted with a 1 1/2 S.U carb HS4 or HIF38.
Cheers,
Neil

Keep the 1098 camshaft it's regarded as a good, torquey unit. It has even been used in some Coopers. Using a big valve head will loose you some low revs torque anyway so you don't want to loose any more by using a faster road spec cam.

If you changed the cam for the 1275 one then you should have to change the oil pump too as it has a different drive. Like Pete says better to stick with the 1098 one.
An E-reg Metro would probably have a leaded head fitted. My mate had one and he was told to use 4-star in it not unleaded (of course he could have been given duff info but you never know!).
Metro 1.0s were fitted with HIF38 carbs, minis were fitted with HS4s (generally). Those are the most common cars I think with those carbs. There are others like the Marina (HS4 I think) but there should be plenty of scrap metros and minis about.

Austin Metro's with unleaded heads, 1275cc 12HE24, 35, 39, 40, 41, 42, 67 up to 75.
I think the Metro's started having unleaded heads sometime during 1989.
