Not much that you can do with the early wipers, there is no upgrade for the wiper motor under the dash. The best thing you can do is a thorough check and service.
1. Remove the inst. panel and check that the plate with the rubber mountings on is still attached to the motor and the metal frame- mine is not.
2. Lift the wipers clear of the screen and run the motor to make sure that it is running freely, if not then the motor may need removing and packing with fresh grease.
3. Remove the glove box and check that the wheel box clamp screws on both sides are tight and there is no movement in the rack or free movement of the wiper arms
4. Fit wiper arms with strong tension springs and check the condition of the blades.
That should keep you busy for a few hours, especially the first part.

There is a bolt on conversion that does not alter the original spindles and allows you to use the newer type of wiper arm and blade, this was fitted to my traveller when I bought it and is a good job. I will post a pic of it to let you see, I think I may even have a spare set somewhere.

I have the old clap-hands wipers on my daily car, they have always been sufficient, they seem for me to work much better in very heavy rain than light drizzle but I've never really had a problem as long as the rubbers are wiped clean every so often.
Steaming up on the inside seems to cause much more of a visibility problem than rain! :P

Don't fit new parts if you can help it. If the original rack and spindles are working, give it all a good grease and keep it all working! Using Rainex regularly on the outside of the screen helps a lot to get the rain water off.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Works well for me! I guess it depends how you apply it. Rainex saved us on the way back from the East Kent Hampshire holiday a couple of years ago when the travellers drivers side wiper spindle siezed on me in heavy rain. A wipe of Rainex on the screen and the raindrops just beaded and rolled off at 50mph!

I didnt get around to looking in the garage, but noticed these on ebay tonight. The top bit that is screwed on is the adapter I was talking about to allow you to use the newer stronger blades and arms from a 1000. Easily removed when your going for concourse :D :o
