I need to get some fixings for the new car. BUT what is the thread most used on the body ? I need to fit a parcell shelf and do a few other things to prep for the MOT. I am not worried about tools I just need to know what nut and bolts to buy. I.E thread Whit/BSF or UNC/UNF type.i have loads of metric but none of the english!!! Mick

On the body - mostly BSF or BSW. Engine etc is UNF/UNC. Suspension etc can be a right old mixture of both!

You will probably have to go to a specialist supplier, you certainly won't get them on your local DIY or probably not even your local hardware shop. Whilst you are in the hardware shop buy yourself a set of thread gauges.
Never throw nuts and bolts away, keep an old paint tin to put them in.

Thank for that Mike. Auto jumbles are the best way that i can think of. I enjoy these, Bike ones up to now. So I will have to include car ones as well. The english sizes were available in mixed packs, but unfortunatly not now. Even the bike trade is getting hard to find them. Mick

There are companies advertising on the internet which supply older threads.

For certain nuts and bolts in BSF and UNF sizes, I have often found your friendly Morris Minor parts supplier to be cheaper than Namrick. Give ESM or Bull Motif, GS Jones, etc a phone call. They will know exactly which sizes and threads of nuts and bolts are used where on the car. For 1/4 whitworth head/5/16 BSF thread wing bolts, its a no brainer, the Moggy suppliers are cheaper than Namrick.

Even on original cars you will find a weird mixture of threads - the 471 type of rear lights on MM/S11 are held on to the body with BSF bolts, the internal bulb holders by 2BA screws & the chrome rims by ...... 3/16 Whitworth screws.

Throw in the metric fine thread nuts and bolts with Whitworth heads on the Series MM engine and you have quite a selection.
