Kick plate fixings

Hi
Please can somebody tell me if I'm right in thinking there should be self tappers fixing the top edge of the kick plates against/to the top of the sills? If so, how many and what measurements across top and do they actually go into the inner sill or just act against it to anchor the kick plate

I have a restored '69 van (same size as 4 door saloon kick plates) and there are no screws so it rattles.

there are 3 fixing self tappers and they screw into the inner sill

i can get you measurements but not until the weekend, mine are original to my car
