I was hoping someone who has an LCB / three branch manifold fitted to their A series engine might supply me with the measurement depicted in the diagram below. I need to know the distance between where the LCB joins the main exhaust pipe to the centre of the rear axle, doesn't need to be too accurate, to the nearest inch or two would be fine.
67" won't be far off but its a bit difficult to get at mine to be any more accurate right now. I can maybe confirm at the weekend if no one else comes up with anything better but you will have to remind me as I have a sieve for a brain at the mo.....

Compare the Minors - Simples !! http://mog.myfreeforum.org/index.php
When it stops raining and the ground is dry I will attempt to grovel underneath with a tape measure. The distance should be from the front of the silencer which should be the same on all cars?
Ah, I see, thanks Mike... I don't have an LCB yet and have no info on what size / how long they are, so had no idea where to measure from on the current exhaust, but if you think it lines up with the begining of the silencer then I shall take that measurement. If you did happen to be under the car with a tape measure for something else though would you mind double checking the length?
Are you fitting the complete system or just the front pipe? If you are expecting it to join on to the front of the existing silencer then you will probably find that it is a larger bore. If you are buying the complete system then beware. On some systems the tail pipe joins the centre section where it angles up over the axle which makes the alignment very awkward. On my system I had to turn the silencer nearly vertical to get the tail pipe to line up. Logically the two pipes should join on the straight section behind the silencer
Thanks for those hints Mike, I am however making a 'custom' (if you can call it that!) exhaust from JLH / Jetex sections. Basically the LCB will go into a cherry bomb, then over the axle and out of the back, essentially the same design as the off the shelf upgrade but with only one, slightly noisier, silencer
I'm also toying with the idea of side pipes from sections, but the cost in making them is prohibitive at the moment as it will require quite a few bits I think
I made an exhaust like this last summer - using a new-old-stock Cooper S straight through silencer. It's quite 'noisy' - in fact (and I never thought I would say this!) it's really too noisy and becomes tiresome after a while. A Cherry Bomb will be even worse! It does v little to silence the exhaust - I had one on my 1340 Mini - and even with another straight through silencer at the rear - it was still fearsomely loud at full power! But on a v fast Mini - that was ok! On a not-very-fast Minor it's not so ok i'm afraid!
But you see Roy, underneath it all I am a bit of a chav and love loud exhausts! Whilst the power and sound of the car might not marry up I don't really care If I find it gets too much then I may end up changing it, but I owe it to my curiosity to fit one
I'm amazed there isn't an automatic filter for that word!!
Yes George -I was young at one time - my Racing Mini sounded fantastic - with an LCB and open exhaust - although the neighbours didn't agree, when I was loading/unloading it from it's trailer! It's also why I commented that "I never thought I would say" etc - but I'm afraid that is how it is as you get older! I probably won't change my exhaust - but i do realise as I get to the end of a journey that I am sub-consciously driving it in a fashion that will minimise the noise - it resonates at certain frequencies - and begins to annoy![frame][/frame]
Well thats certainly one way of looking at it Mike haha
I think though it is rather more that I love the idea of noisy hotrods and 4x4s - but also love my Minor - and without the means to have one of each I'm sort of mixing the two into one in certain areas, my philosophy though is to try not to make any changes that can't be changed back, so if I ever decide to go back to original I can with moderate ease. It would probably make mores sense with a V8 in it, but a warmed up 1098 will do me fine for the time being
Cool pic Roy, I can't see it big as I'm using a teeny netbook atm, never been rallying - closest I get is 4x4 scuffling in Devon (which is where my love of cherry bombs came from!)
