MOT Fail

Well, Monty is officially unroadworthy.
Fail points
Steering rack gaiter perished
Split pins missing from castleated nuts on tie bars
Severe imbalance in front brakes.
Dont think its too bad considering he's not been moved for 5 months or so, but the jobs wont get done today. I seem to recall someone saying that the steering rack gaiters are a bit of a sod to fix - do I recall correctly?

Not too bad a job to do. Easier to remove TRE's but mark their position before you remove them.
All in an afternoons work.

I expect I can help you do all that - shouldn't take more than a few hours!
Have you investigated the brake imbalance yet? MG Barn should have the gaiters (same as midget), the split pins are easy and the brakes - well they need looking at

Kinda Busy running about doing other stuff atm, but will attend to the car later. Will get the brakes opened up if nothing else. I'm wondering if it might be an adjustment issue tbh

if the car was needed to be motd in a hurry that could all be done in an afternoon, the gaiter can be araldited back together so long as its just split and not falling off,splitpins-fit a pair, and adjust the brakes.not bad really tho

The split was a bit beyond gluing sadly.
Anyhoo, all works now done and completed. Total cost £5.26 - £4.40 for a gaiter and 86p for the castleated nut I lost in the grass somewhere
Missed the MOT tester today, so going in again at 8am tomorrow.

got everything crossed and crossed again

I doubt it would just be 'adjust' the front brakes - did you free them off ?

Oh dear -wouldn't think they should have re-tested that- surely just the bits that failed ?

I'm of the understanding that if theres any failure in the brakes the whole system is re-tested.
Its a bit of a pain in the bum though.

Hmm - and do you get another 'free' re-test?

Unfortunately to complete the "online" brake test the whole procedure has to be gone through again. The only way out of this is to use the Tapley meter and then only if the vehicle was left at the MOT station for repairs and not removed to conduct your own repairs....

Technically no, however I've still not paid for the first one!

Our MOT man is a pretty decent chap - he wont charge till it passes or you swear at it and take it away for good
